Maximilian (Max) Rak, age 92, currently of Westlake, Ohio, formerly residing in Richmond Heights, Ohio has passed from this world to a better place from natural causes on October 6, 2017. Max was born in Slovenia, graduated as a medical doctor from Karl-Franzens-Universitat Graz, Austria and immigrated to the U.S. in 1955 with his wife  Margaret (Meta) (nee  Erker) Rak, also from Slovenia. He was a beloved family physician serving many in the community for 40 years on the east side of Cleveland.

Max is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Meta, and his three children, Dr. Linda Rak Canepa (Charles ) of Lakewood, Ohio , Margaret Rak Shipman (Christopher) of Harrison, NY and Dr. Thomas Rak (Andrea) of Springfield, Ohio. Max loved and was loved by his grandchildren, Alexandra, Hannah, Ian, and Everett Canepa, Caroline, Isabel and Henry Shipman, and Alexander Rak. Max very much enjoyed the outdoors and nature, especially skiing and fishing.

Max was preceded in death by his siblings, Ani (Frank) Zumer and Miro Rak from Toronto, Canada, Vincent Rak from Wickliffe, Ohio and Ivan Rak who lived in Youngstown, Ohio. Surviving family includes Ani Rak (Durham, North Carolina), Matilda Rak (Toronto, Canada), and Tinka Rak (Girard, Ohio) and many nieces and nephews.

A Catholic Mass of Christian Burial to be held Friday October 13, 2017 at 11:00 am celebrated by Father John Kumse at St. Mary’s Church at 15519 Holmes Ave Cleveland, Ohio.  Prior to the Mass, the family will receive family and friends at the church starting at 9:30 am. Following the Mass a reception will be held at the church. Private family interment at St. Joseph Cemetery, Avon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorial be made to Doctors Without Borders, www.doctorswithoutborders.org, or your favorite charity

    We always enjoyed spending time with Max. He was a wonderful friend. I remember skiing with Max in Colorado. We shared our grandchildren, whom we both loved dearly. We visited Max in Florida several times and he was always a gracious host. He will be missed!
